Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is a highly urbanized city with traces of Spanish colonial past. Manila’s grit and chaotic identity is an interesting and adventurous city to explore especially among backpackers and big-city lovers who want to experience the fusion of cultures that have lingered throughout its colorful centuries-old history. We’ve rounded up the 5 best places to visit if you’re flying to Manila.
1. Intramuros
Intramuros is a historic walled landmark within the city that was built during the Spanish colonial era. The 4.5-kilometer “walled city” is now one of the top tourist attractions in Manila wherein visitors can join historical walking tours to learn about the Philippines’ complex past, marvel at the grand Spanish architecture and baroque church designs, and enjoy cultural performances.
2. Binondo
Binondo is the oldest Chinatown in the world existing since 1594. It is known as the “foodie haven” in Manila where locals and foreigners flock to taste various authentic Chinese cuisines from hole-in-the-wall restaurants to upscale family-style buffet dining. The best time to visit Binondo is during the Chinese New Year between the months of January and February where you can witness multiple dragon dances and other fun festivities.
3. National Museum Complex
The National Museum Complex located in Rizal Park has four main attractions: the National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History, and National Planetarium. A day is not enough to explore the historical artifacts, art, and treasures housed within the buildings so you better plan your visit. The National Museum of Natural History is the latest installment in the complex, which opened in May 2018, retaining its neoclassical structures despite renovations.
4. Cultural Center of the Philippines
The Cultural Center of the Philippines is the center for showcasing the country’s arts and culture. Built-in 1966, it is home to the major performance groups that have represented the Philippines in various performances all over the world such as the Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theater, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra among others. The CCP has year-round events to showcase so check-out their website if you’re interested in some of the performances.
5. Makati
Situated in the northwest of Manila is Makati City, the country’s central business district. It is a cosmopolitan area where most foreign trade companies, first-class hotels, art galleries, shopping, and entertainment hotspots are located. Locals and ex-pats alike find Makati to be the center of social life within Metro Manila.
